Remarkably, the film was shot on 35mm with a mere $68,000. He was 23. Sweet Thing is an ambitious Southern drama in which David was Executive Producer, Director, Co-Writer, Director of Photography, Editor and Composer. Sweet Thing was one of ten films in the American Film Competition at the Seattle International Film Festival 1999, and one of seven in competition at the Austin Film Festival, where the film broke the box office record and outsold a revival screening of Terms of Endearment. MovieMaker Magazine called Sweet Thing “a dazzling directorial debut and wrote that David is “destined for greatness. Sweet Thing was acquired for North American DVD/video distribution, shipping 11,000 units to 1,800 stores. Intoxicating, picked up and released by American World/Image Entertainment, had a five-city theatrical release and has moved almost 50,000 units worldwide.
David’s acclaimed sophomore motion picture Intoxicating stars Academy Award nominee Eric Roberts (Runaway Train and Pope of Greenwich Village) and John Savage (Deer Hunter, White Squall), as well as Danish star Camilla Overbye Roos (Titanic). Completed in 2004, Intoxicating, directed, scored and edited by David, was released theatrically in the U.S. and overseas, and is currently under license to American World Pictures. Intoxicating was co-produced with breakout Los Angeles-based independent film company Rogue Arts (Loser, My Sweet Killer, Hard Luck and The Violent Kind). David, a partner in Rogue Arts, has helped engineer the company through a major growth period which has seen it become one of the leading U.S. distributors of specialized theatrical and home video/DVD titles, including European smash hits Flickering Lights and Ambush; acclaimed September 11th documentary Brothers on Holy Ground; cult independent hit Cannes Man (Johnny Depp); and Allie and Me (which David also scored) starring James Wilder, Dyan Cannon, and Ed Lauter, directed by Michael Rymer (Battlestar Galactica and Queen of the Damned, starring the late Aaliyah).
A musician since childhood, David’s foray into feature films began when he directed a music video for his rock band The Agency. The video caught the attention of the festival circuit and premiered at the 1997 SXSW Film Festival. Soon after, David went on to co-produce and direct the photography of the feature film Best Texas Grocery, starring Jeremy Fox (Dazed and Confused), which was accepted into competition at the 1998 SXSW Film Festival. David’s complimentary skills in cinematography and music keep him busy. While shooting the feature film The Duo, helmed by director Tony Hewett and starring Tiny Lister (The Fifth Element, Friday, Little Nicky), he was hired to co-score the film with Grammy Award winning composers The Other Brothers (Fight Club). David, along with long-time collaborator Will Tabanou, also scored The Asylum’s feature film The Source. Next, Sony Pictures and Lakeshore Entertainment hired David and Tabanou to score and edit segments designated for the DVD/home video release of the acclaimed horror genre title Underworld and Underworld: Evolution(starring Kate Beckinsale). David’s other Director of Photography credits include Thug Life, Yorick, Hurricane Katrina and the Project Named Desire, Chloe, Cowbombs… and Other Annoyances, Bun B’s “Get Throwed” music video, along with 2nd Unit Director of Photography on the feature documentary See You in the Future. He also co-owns and operates a post-production facility in West Hollywood.
